the Service your Board Night!

By | tSB News | No Comments

In preparation for our (rescheduled) first day on the mountain during our Winter Program, tSB hosted a “Service Your Board” night where Prophets, Peer Leaders and Mentors could learn about the equipment they’ll be riding this season.

Board Waxing!Sean Rodda, a long time volunteer with tSB and SnoCon employee offered to facilitate the evening’s activities at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center.

Here, the group spent two hours learning why waxing their snowboards are so important, how to keep up a good wax coating and what they’d need in order to do this on their own. It’s important to tSB to not only introduce Snowboard Culture to its participants, but also teach our Youth and Mentors how to make sure they can keep up this challenging, outdoor, winter-weather sport even after their time at tSB is through. This great event helped us support this goal and acclimate our new snowboarders to life riding #pow.

Learning to waxThanks Sean Rodda! We had a great turn out and were able to wax about 20 Boards. tSB is hoping to host a Service Your Board Night Part II in the next few weeks for those that missed out last week and for returners to expand their knowledge of equipment.

Tim Layton Shines as tSB Snowboard Instructor!

By | Show Love | No Comments

Tim Layton, a former tSB youth and currently one of our Assistant Snowboard Instructors, stood out as one of the most helpful and dedicated Instructors this weekend at our first on-mountain day.

One of his instructor peers said of Tim: “[he] had a really great attitude and was very positive and encouraging … He had a smile on his face … and I saw him put a smile on the prophets’ faces more than once with his feedback, high fives and good energy.”

tSB 2014 is lucky to have such a great coach working with our youth and mentors. Keep up the filthy instructing, Tim!

If you missed it, don’t worry: Volunteer Orientation occurs the third Thursday of every month from 6:45-8pm @ Youngstown. Check out our “Get Involved” Page on our homepage for more details and RSVP with!

What tSB did this Weekend

By | tSB News | No Comments

tSB had a fun-filled, action-packed weekend. Half of tSB celebrated kick off, where Mentors and our newly selected Prophets met and got to know each other.

Other members of tSB, namely our 12 remaining volunteer Snowboard Instructors spent the weekend at Stevens Pass learning from Coaches and getting trained on AASI Level 1 curriculum. We are now all trained and ready for our first day on the Mountain… in 34 days!

tSB is pumped for the start of our 19th Winter Season together!!!!

Invitation to Cook for tSB & Be a Meal Team Volunteer!

By | tSB News | No Comments
All of our volunteers are critical to the functioning of the Service Board, but a Meal Team volunteer  serves in a special capacity. As you may know, tSB’s success is reliant on the depth of the relationship between mentors and youth. Our Meal Team Volunteers provide opportunities for our mentors and youth to bond while sharing a homemade meal on a Program, Service and/or Snowboard Day.
We’d like to share our Program Calendar and Meal needs with you to ask you to commit to one, two or as many meals as you are able by Friday January 31st. While logistics will be communicated with you after you have signed up for a date, essentially what you need to know is that we’ll provide the budget and you (or you and a group of your friends/family) make the food for a specified date listed on this Google Document. Please enter in ALL information, including phone number and email.
Thank you in advance to supporting the Service Board in this capacity. You will receive a confirmation email with more information within ten days of signing up for a specific date. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact me at 206-324-7771 or email
We look forward to eating your delicious food!!

tSB Snowboard Instructor Training!

By | tSB News | No Comments

Last weekend we partnered with Stevens Pass Mountain Resort ski school to provide half of our Snowboard Instructor volunteers with teaching training. Despite being freezing cold, our Instructors came away with better tools to coach our youth this year: shared terminology, a learning progression, new games to teach skills, basic safety lessons and ways to give feedback. Plus we all became stronger riders.

We’ve got another training at Stevens coming up for the other half of our 2014 Snowboard Instructors in January and we’re looking forward to another rad weekend on the mountain!

Day of Caring, Day of Service, Day of Gratitude

By | tSB News | No Comments

Yesterday, United Way of King County hosted its annual Day of Caring Event and the Service Board was lucky enough to have their project selected. Yesterday, we hosted 23 volunteers from Microsoft’s User Experience – Bing Division. Their mission: help tSB reorganize our equipment and apparel from our basement to gear up for our snowboarding season.

For those of you who have seen our basement, you know this was quite the undertaking…but nothing that this group couldn’t handle.  For four  hours, we moved, sorted, compiled and played with our gear.

A big shout out to our handy volunteers who moved furniture, built new organizing systems, folded clothes
and especially to those that weren’t afraid to get a little dirty!

We honestly couldn’t have done any of this without you. We want to extend a huge thank-you to everyone that came out to support #tSB to help us get organized for our winter program during the #dayofcaring.
